This season, ARL Development is running a five week Harvey Norman Backyard League program in primary schools around western Sydney, with an emphasis on creating a sustainable program which allows children to run their own version of a Rugby League game when a facilitator is not present.
This teaches children how to create their own game of Rugby League, whether it is in the front or backyard at home, in the playground or at the park.
The five week program also incorporates a classroom session where ARL Development staff teaches the students about healthy and active lifestyles, with the assistance of the NRL’s One Community ambassador, Mario Fenech.
The children participate in the “Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well” program, where they learn about the different types of “fuel” that the body needs to maintain energy whilst staying healthy, as well as learning about fun activities to keep the body in good condition.
In the last week of the program, the school participates in an intra school gala day, where classes will play games in a round robin format against other classes.
Schools who are currently participating in the Backyard League program include Ashcroft PS, Macquarie Fields PS, Ingleburn PS, Kearns PS, St Francis Xavier (Lurnea), St Therese (Sadleir), and Briar Rd PS.
If you think your school might be interested in participating in this program, please contact Kasey Campbell, National Development Officer Western Sydney, on 0448890015 or email wsrl2@arldevelopment.com.au
