The NSWRL Western Sydney Academy’s Pacific Communities program is headed up by David Lakisa.
The Pacific Communities program incorporates two main areas, the first being the coaching and development of players and the recruitment of coaches, trainers and referees of Pacific Islander and Maori heritage.
To better develop the involvement of Pacific Communities in western Sydney, the program features regular camps and culminates in the annual Youth Development Cup, which gives junior players not involved with a NSWRL Junior Representative team the chance to play at a representative level.
At an educational level, the Pacific Communities program was established to assist in bridging any cultural gap that may exist in the wider community. This cross cultural education – achieved through regular workshops at clubs and schools in western Sydney – aims to achieve increased involvement in Rugby League from Pacific Communities.
